Darth Vader Helmets and Costumes

Brief Prop and Costume History
First seen in Star Wars - A New Hope in 1977, Vader's design was originally conceived by Ralph McQuarrie in 1975. Initial design sketch for head and shoulders was sculpted by Brian Muir (working for Elstree Studios' Art Department) in 1976 - and from this the fiberglass helmet and armor were produced. John Mollo designed Vader's costume including soft-parts which were assembled by his costuming department.

For The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi new helmets and costumes were made, the hard parts cast from the original ANH set. Character was also seen in Revenge of the Sith although a new symmetrical helmet sculpt was created - based on parts of an existing Original Trilogy Helmet.

Replicas:
Darth Vader has always been the franchises "No.1" most marketable character by a huge margin. There have therefore been numerous licensed (i.e. Official and Lucasfilm approved) and Fan-made replicas made, right from 1977 up to 2010.
